In 1894, Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar visited Calcutta to meet Lord Elgin, the then viceroy of India. During his stay the Maharaja was affected by diphtheria, & he died on 28 December 1894. On his death this piece of land was acquired by the Mysore royal family, which was at the bank of the Adi Ganga and adjacent to the Keoratala Burning Ghat, and the Maharaja was cremated here. In his memory a garden and a memorial was created at that spot.
Few years after his death, the maharaja’s sons built a Vishnu temple in their father’s memory in the spot, in the style of the 12th century Chenna Keshava Temple of Belur (Karnataka). There is a smaller temple dedicated to Lord Shiva that was built by the Maharaja of Tripura. On his return from the USA, Swami Vivekananda had spent some time in the Shiva temple, while visiting the nearby Kalighat temple.
